When do Students use Future simple? How is it build? Which verbs are common with Future simple?
- predictions, expectations, or guesses about the future
- decisions made at the time of speaking (on-the-spot decisions)
- for requests, offers, threats, warnings, hopes and promises
- for actions/events/situations which will definitely happen in the future and which we cannot control (the weather f.e)
Which are some time expressions for future simple and be going to?
-tomorrow, the day after tomorrow, tonight, soon, next week/month/year, in a week/month/year, in two/three days/weeks, etc.
Which verbs are usually used in promises?
-promise, swear, guarantee
Which verbs/expressions/adverbs are used in predictions?
Verbs:-think, believe, expect
Expressions:-be sure, be afraid
Adverbs:probably, perhaps, certainly, definitely, likely, maybe
Where do you use maybe and perhaps?
-at the beginning of sentences (Maybe I will…)
Where do you use adverbs such as probably, perhaps, certainly?
-after will or after be ( I will probably be…)
When do Students use be going to?
- for plans, intentions, or ambitious we have for the future ( I am going to become…)
- for actions we have already decided to do in the near future
- predict the near future when there is present evidence (clouds->rain)
Difference between will and be going to?
-going to: something we intend to do
-will: to give details or make comments
-going to: already decided;
-will: on-the-spot decisions
-predictions: going to-> evidence (see, know)
will-> no evidence needed (believe, think is enough)
When do you use future continuous?
- to emphasize an action that will be in progress at a specific time in the futures (this time next year…)
- action which will definitely happen in the future as the result of a routine or arrangement
- when we ask politely about someone’s plans for the near future (we want to know if our wishes fit in their plan)
What are some differences between future progressive and be going to?
-both can express plans and intentions, but students should use future progressive for a more formal tone
When should students use future perfect?
-for an action which will be finished before a stated future time
When do should students use Future Perfect Continuous?
- to emphasize the duration of an action up to a certain time in the future
- used with: by…for..
What is the connection between simple present, time clauses, future perfect and future perfect continuous?
- after: by the time, until, before we use simple present (they introduce time clauses), after that future perfect or future perfect continuous may continue (may before or after time clause):
- by the time they reach York, they will have been traveling for four hours
- I will not have finished cleaning the house until you come back
For what can we also use the future simple, future continuous or future perfect?
-to make a prediction about the present or the past, to say what may be happening or have happened
When do we use present simple (future)?
-when we refer to programmes, timetables, etc.
