The Four Statements of Logic Flashcards
Four Categorical Propositions
A, I, E, and O
A Statement
All S is P
I Statement
Some S is P
E Statement
No S is P
O Statement
Some S is not P
Quantifiers
All/Some/No/Some Not
Quality
Has to do with whether a proposition is affirmative or negative
Quantity
Whether or not a proposition is universal or particular (applies to one thing or everything). ‘All’ signifies universal and ‘Some’ indicates particulars
Distinguishing Universals
Sometimes there is no quantifier in a statement, so you have to try to figure out its quantity. For example, if you say ‘Socrates is mortal,’ you assume that there is only one Socrates so it’s particular. In another example, ‘Frogs are ugly,’ it is assumed that you are talking about all frogs so it is universal.
