Contradictory and Contrary Statements Flashcards
Two Categorical Relationships
Opposition and Equivalence
Four Types of Opposition
Contradiction, Contraries, Subcontraries, and Subalternates
What’s the Rule of Contradiction?
Contradictories are statements that differ in both quality and quantity. So, A-O and I-E are examples of contradictories.
What’s the First Law of Opposition?
Contradictories cannot at the same time be true nor at the same time be false. Could A-O or I-E be true or false at the same time? No, they cannot.
What’s the Rule of Contraries?
Two statements are contrary if they are both universal but differ in quality. So, A and E are the only contraries.
What’s the Second Law of Opposition?
Contraries can’t be true at the same time, but can be false at the same time.
