The Eyes Parts and Functions Flashcards
Sclera
maintains shape and protects the inside
cornea
lets light into the eye and bends light rays
choroid coat
gives nourishment and absorbs scattered light rays
iris
adjusts the size of the pupil to control the amount of light entering the eye
pupil
lets light into the eye
lens
focuses light into the retina and changes shape to focus on far/near objects
Ciliary Muscles
changes the curvature of the lens
Aqueous humour
maintains the shape of the eye and nourishes the surrounding cells
vitreous humour
maintains the shape of the eye
Retina
contains photoreceptors which are rods and cons
Rods
detect light intensity
Cones
detect colour
Fovea Centralis
area where does are densely packed
Blind Spot
contains no rods or cones
Optic Nerve
carries impulses from rods and cones to the brain
Conjunctiva
covers the underside of the eye lid and eyeball, seals the eye from infection
Pinna
captures sound waves and directs them into the ear
Hyperopia
eye too short and lens too flat
cannot focus on nearby objects
need convex lenses
Myopia
eye too long, lens too round
can’t focus on on far objects
need a concave lens
Astigmatism
uneven curvature of cornea
light can’t be bent to meet correct focal point
need uneven lenses
