The Eye Anatomy Flashcards
What is the ‘sclera’ and explain its purpose?
Tough, connective layer… It holds the eye in place… It’s typically white in humans.
What is the ‘ciliary body’ and explain its purpose?
Muscular ring, goes around the lens… Works alongside the ‘suspensory ligament’ to control the shape and movement of the lens.
Where is the ‘Aqueous Humour’ produced, and explain its purpose?
It is created in the ‘ciliary body’… It is a fluid that nourishes/protects the eye and cornea.
What is the lens made up of, and what does it do?
Made up of collogin… Ensures clear focus
Where is the pupil located and explain its purpose?
The pupil is the gap/space which allows light to enter the eye.
What is the purpose of the vitreous humour?
Maintains the shape of the eye.
What is the iris, and what does it do?
coloured part of the eye… Its made of smooth muscle… it dilates and contracts..
‘Window to the eye’.. Transparent and Avascular.. What structure is it describing?
The Cornea
What are cones and rods?
Cones = detect colour Rods = Detect Black/White
Where are there both rods and cones present?
The Retina
Does the ‘Fovea’ contain lots of cones OR lots of rods?
Lots of Cones
‘Centre of visual Field’. What structure is being described?
The Fovea
The ‘macula’ surrounds the fovea. What is unique about this structure?
It slowly degenerates over time.
Describe the ‘optic disc’ (brief).
Blind area… No rods or cones present.
Dogs have how many types of colour photoreceptors? (Hint, humans have three).
Two.
