Skeletal System Flashcards
The mammalian skeletal system is…..
appendicular skeleton, axial skeleton
Describe the ‘scapula’. (forelimb, appendicular)
- shoulder blade
- lies flat
- attached muscles hold the foreleg
Describe the ‘clavicle’ (forelimb, appendicular)
- collar bone
- lies across the front of the chest, between shoulder and the breast bone (not all animals have this).
Describe the ‘humerus’ (forelimb, appendicular)
- long bone
- lies between shoulder and elbow joints
Describe the ‘radius’ & ‘ulna’ (forelimb, appendicular)
- 2 bones (ulna = narrow bone // radius = rectangular bone).
- Runs elbow to wrist.
Describe the ‘Carpal bone’ (forelimb, appendicular)
- make up the wrist
- two bones
Describe the ‘metacarpal bone’ (forelimb, appendicular)
- wrist joint to paw
Describe the ‘phalanges’ (forelimb, appendicular)
- small bones, make up digits
- number of phalanges depends on species
Describe the ‘pelvis’ (hindlimb, appendicular)
- top of animals hind legs
- made up of 4 bones fused together
Describe the ‘femur’ (hindlimb, appendicular)
- hip bone
- runs down the thigh (hip to knee)
