The Evidence Linking Smoking to Disease Flashcards
What is Epidemiology?
Epidemiology is the study of distribution of disease in populations, and factors influencing it.
What does Epidemiology identify?
Countries at greater risk, age range of population at greatest risk, sex at greater risk, lifestyle factors increasing/decreasing the risk.
What can Epidemiological information help?
Help countries/organisations can target further spending, research particular damaging factors, help target screening procedures, advice/education for population most at risk, predict prevalence of a disease, target geographical areas at risk.
What are some statistics relating smoking to disease?
3 times more likely to die prematurely if you smoke. 50% likely to die from smoking related diseases.
What are the links to Lung Cancer?
18X more likely to develop lung cancer if you smoke, 25% die of lung cancer, chance reduces if stop smoking.
