What do Cardiovascular Diseases affect?
Cardiovascular diseases are those that affect the heart and circulatory system. These include atherosclerosis, CHD, stroke and arteriosclerosis.
Why is treating Cardiovascular diseases difficult?
Treating Cardiovascular diseases can be difficult, use drugs to reduce blood pressure and cholesterol levels.
What are the first signs of cardiovascular diseases and what does this result in?
High blood pressure and hypertension are first signs of cardiovascular diseases. Friction increased by small lumen, so blood pressure increases as heart tries to counteract it, walls of artery also become less elastic. Arteriosclerosis is hardening of artery walls caused by deposition of minerals such as calcium in walls as atheroma.
What is Angina?
Angina is a severe pain felt in the chest during exercise.
What may a heart attack feel like?
- Heart attack may feel as if a tight band has been placed around the chest.
Why are symptoms of a stroke always sudden?
- Symptoms of a stroke are always sudden, as parts of the brain receive insufficient oxygen.
What are the symptoms of a stroke?
Sudden numbness/weakness of face on one side of the body. Sudden confusion and difficult in speaking/understanding. Sudden difficulty with walking – dizziness, loss of balance/coordination. Sudden severe headache.
What increases the risk of developing a CHD?
Risk of developing CHD is increased by: Age (older), gender (men), cigarette smoking, obesity, hypertension, high blood cholesterol concentration, physical inactivity/sedentary lifestyle, diet/salt, absence of healthy fats, absence of antioxidants, genetic factors, diabetes, stress.
What happens in LEDCs?
People more likely to die of something else in LEDCs.
