What is Nutrition?
Nutrition is nourishment – nutrients and energy needed for health and growth.
What does good nutrition provide?
Better health, strong immune system, ill less frequently, stronger and more productivity.
How do you define obesity?
Obesity is 20% or more heavier than the recommended weight for their height.
What are the main components of a healthy diet?
Carbohydrates – Main energy source.
Proteins – Source of energy, used in cell membranes, waterproofing, absorption of fat-soluble vitamins.
Vitamins – Chemical processes in cells. Some water-soluble, some fat-soluble.
Minerals – Inorganic elements in body, essential for normal functioning.
Water – Transporting substances around body, 60% of body is water.
Fibre – Indigestible part of food, healthy functioning of digestive system.
Where should your energy intake come from?
57% of energy intakes from Carbohydrates, 30% from fats and 13% from proteins.
How do you calculate BMI?
Mass in Kg/ Height in M2.
What are the ranges for BMI?
18.5 or less – underweight, 18.5-25 healthy, 25-30 overweight, 30-35 obese (Class 1), 35-40 (Class II), over 40 – morbidly obese.
What can make fat especially bad?
Fat around middle is worse than at hips or thighs.
