EU
The european union is a supranational organisation of european countries froemd after world war 2 to reduce trade barriers and increase cooperation among its members
* Established in 1957 by the treaty of rome as the EEC (european economic community) when the treaty was ratified in 1993 and was renamed EU as a result of the increases economic and political integration
Benefits from eu
- Removing coal and and steel production from national control has resulted in war between member states impossible
- Essc provided the basis for the EEC
- All treaties between its member states have increased the processs towards a fuller european integration
- Pooling sovereignity of member states would achieve greater political organisation
- Increased membership from 6 in 1957 to 27 in 2022
- Banishing prospecrs of war by having aims of integration adn expansion
- EU posseses intergovernmental organs of governance which protect the sovereignoty of members in certain key areas (foreign policy, defence and taxation)
The four freedoms
Free movement of goods - not impose tariffs on good from another member state - customs union
Free movement of services - businesses should be able to open up and operate in any member state
Free movement of capital - capital should be able to move freely throughout the member states
Free movement of people - no barriers internally should stop citizens of the eu working in any member state and being able to claim same social benefits
The four freedoms
The free movement of goods,services,capital and people through which european economic unity will be achieved
(laid out in the orginal treaty of rome and envisganed a european single market)
Pooled sovereignity in the EU?
The individual member states surrender some of their national sovereignity in order to work together for mutual and collective benefit
Subsidiarity
The idea that decisions should ne taken at the most appropriate level which should always be as local as possible
European parliament
The only directly elected body in the EU
Parliaments powers have increased over the years because of its democratic mandate and holds co-legislative powers with the council
The council of european union
Ministers from the executives of the member states make up the council
Which ministers participate depends on the policy area under dicussion
European commision
Consists of comissioners
The european court of justice
