  • Established in 1930s under Robert Peel - defenders of hierarchy, ruling elite, monarchy and church of england
  • Highly succesful in the 19-20th century - appealed to the middle class and aristocracy
  • Peel stressed the importance of gradual reform to protest and conserve institutions

  • Associated with Benjamin Disraeli - rich look agfter the poor, aimed to bridge the gap between the rich and the poor through paternalistic social policy
  • Disraeli saw society as an organic body - stability and prosperity only achieved through uniting nations
  • Patriotic foreign policy - strengthem national unity
  • Peaked post war when party accepted change introduced by atlee government (welfare state, NHS, govt action to maintain high employment, keyneisain economies, nationalised indusrty
  • Pragmatic approach - mixed free market with labour policies of state intervention and welfare
  • Post war consensus
