Englightenment’s style
Mid 18th c
Emphasis on science, opposed corruption/power/superstition of church, believed no supernatural phenomena, believed scientific ideas, believed disease was natural, believed god is nature tho just not an actor, believed in human progress, rejected ‘great man’ history, interested in non-European cultures
Edward Gibbon’s style
covers Roman Empire, Europe, Catholic Church, etc.
Included precursors, emphasises on primary sources, had less secondary, used books around him (saw travelling as time consuming) - so no contribution to methodology - looked at global history.
David Hume’s style
wrote political, constitutional, social history.
mentioned considerations of influence from religion on social/political life.
Summarised speeches.
William Goodwin’s style
Studies mankind in mass, ‘important’ to track progression, individual history to show motive and who they influenced, history allows us to look minutely
