Reveals untold history, wants non-academic people to understand history too, believes never fully understand history without ordinary people.

Offers complexity, tells stories of many people, offers more human experiences

Created history workshop journal.
Inspired interest from outside academics.
Socialists in nature.
Very classed based.
Howard Zinn’s style
Popularised history from below for non academics but criticised it for being too focused on class conflicts
Gerald Strauss’s critic
Knows that there are not a lot of records to use for these groups & he admitted putting his own ideas in his writings.
BUT
there are court records, notes of magistrates, ballads, letters, oral history and petitions to be used
E.P.Thomas’s style
Wanted historians to undertake projects of 'rescue'. Wanted working class to be heard but he shys away from negative things.
Tim Hitchcock’s style
Wrote about gender, sexuality, poverty, etc and published to websites to boost access to non academics
