Attitudes of ordinary people towards every day life - a more psychological look rather than economic/social that other annals historians may do.

Focuses on study of mentalities.
Says ideas need to mature and develop, not everyone is ready or agrees straight away.
New ideas need to link to existing ones.
Believes society is slowly becoming civilised.
Opened door for social history.

For studying changes over a long period of time

Colonial, studied national and human environment and its impact on crisis - trends?
Ernest Labrousie’s style
Used statistical analysis eg on weather to see its affect on economy.
