Medieval History Flashcards
High-Anglo Norman 1000-1300 AD
The ‘golden’ age of writing, educated men in royal court began writing, desire to reclaim cultural identity after French invasion
Caesarea’s style
‘Father of church history,’ written history instead of oral, included politically unimportant people, focus on religion & society, time is linear (start and end)
Geoffrey of Monmouth’s style
Wrote about King Arthur - a myth
Cons of medieval history
A lot myths and legends to fill in gaps due to lack in written material, but covered a few topics
eg = secular chronicles = national history
= vernacular = private history, family, history, memoirs etc
Annals
covered weather, national, international events etc
By the church at first, not analytical, events selective, covered many subjects - farming, agricultural, economy, law, wars/battles.
Made under royal patronage.
Soon non-religious chronicles appeared
Bedes’s style
shows growth of church, had a thematic approach, made a story narrative, followed roman history traditions, king plays positive roles in his writing, first author to date fully, miracles always had moral/spiritual point, dramatic description, lists main sources but hard to tell legends a part, idealiser, poetry an interest for him
