Gender History’s beliefs/style
Questioned what was historically important, history focused on public life so excluded women in private life, women history more in oral history and need to read between the lines in other sources, men more likely to be educated so wrote more of the evidence.
Expanded to non-western women and women in the LGBTQ+ group.
Anna Comnene’s style
1083-1153, Byzantine princess, wrote about father’s reign and wars/political relations -so still ‘men’ topics.
Anges Strickland’s style
1796-1874, Multi volumes of Queens of England, widely read in Victorian Period.

20th c, wrote on medieval history and women in religion.

Idea to fill in gaps and still separate from mainstream history though

believed sexes couldn’t be separate & would be hypocritical to remove men in history.
Patriarchy constructed both sexes, non elite men affected.

Artistotle’s style

places men as superior, men signified perfection of conception, anything less than perfect is monstrous.
Thomas Aquinas’s style
women’s inferiority due to Eve’s sin, men need to control/assist women
