The Endocrine System-note 10 Flashcards
1
Q
Hormones
A
Chemical messenger that acts on target cells
2
Q
Steroid hormone
A
- carried in blood and released in vicinity of target cells
- ex. Estrogen and testosterone ( stimulates liver to convert amino acids to glucose)
- binds to receptors in cytoplasm
3
Q
Function of endocrine system
A
Glands that produce and secrete hormones (chemical messenger)
Involved in maintaining homeostasis
4
Q
Protein hormones
A
- made of chains of amino acids
- help activate enzymes
- include insulin and growth hormones
- bind to receptors on cell membrane
5
Q
Pituitary gland. Location?
A
- Base on brain
- pituitary stalk (infundibulum ) attaches to the hypothalamus
- consists of anterior pituitary and posterior pituitary
6
Q
Role of posterior lobe of pituitary gland?
A
Stores and releases hormones (ADH, oxytocin) synthesized in the hypothalamus
7
Q
Anterior lobe function? Pituitary gland.
A
Produces own hormones
-hormone release regulated by hypothalamus
