The Emigree Flashcards
Why is the poem told from a perspective of a displaced person?
they romanticise an idea of a war-torn place where they were born. Neither the city nor the country was ever named and this lack of detail is intentional, wants it to be relatable to all people who have left their homelands
What does the title ‘emigree’ being female mean?
the speaker is female, perhaps a child, ‘hollow doll’
‘paper plane’
What does the poems fairy tail start show?
‘there was once a country’- suggests it only really existed in her imagination but now the country is ‘sick with tyrants’ who have ‘banned’ the language the speaker once knew
Why is the speaker ‘branded by an impression of sunlight’
verb branded= she will always hold on to the idealised version of her home country as it is permanently marked on her this is reinforced through the repetition of the possessive ‘my city’, this reveals the power places can have even other people who have left them with ‘no passport’ or ‘no way back’
What is the form of Emigree?
the first 2 stanzas have 8 lines but the last has 9 lines symbolising how she doesnt want to stop talking about it
