Mr Hyde Flashcards
‘Hissing intake of breathe’
zoomorphism
like a snake- snakes are seen as secretive and will betray people just like how he betrayed Jekyll by taking over him fully
‘With ape like fury he was tramping his victim’
Adjective- hes animalistic, Darwin- theory of evolution, Freud- theory that criminals look a certain way
‘trampling’ continuous, intensity, urgency
Highlights his inhumane actions, paints him as a criminal with ‘victim’
links to disabilities as they were seen as animals and sent away
‘That human juggernaut trod the child down’
Demonstrative ‘that’ makes him seem like an outsider, metaphor, ‘juggernaut’ = military vehicle, Hyde is highly destructive , female characters and children are always the victims (society structure)
‘Juggernaut’ links to sacrifice , Hyde acts off of Impluse
‘his act and ever though centred on himself’
He was very selfish and self centred which did not line up with the perfect Victorian gentleman , his nature aligns him more with animals than human, opposite to Jekyll and Utterson.
What are key features of Hyde?
He is the foil to Jekyll, By Hyde having a key to Jekyll back door it could show how he is in his subconscious, He is seen as the working class and Jekyll is upper class so he can act with violence as he has no reputation to uphold
