Why is there lots of Ellipsis, caesura?
create a sense of boredom, they are waiting and antisipating conflict, sometimes the cold gets them before the enemy could
‘what are we doing here?’
‘Is it that we are dying?’
rhetorical question, wilfred owen is criticising the war and its pointlessness, he sees suffering
‘all their eyes are ice’
literally- really freezing cold, eyes have glazed over
metaphorical- they have lost their soul, thing that keeps them going. the fire inside them
‘slowly our ghosts drag home’
they are already dead, imagining they will die, they have no meaning. they are destined to die
‘merciless iced east winds that knive us’
merciless- maximum punishment, connotations of torture, nature is presented as a real enemy, stabbing them, how powerful they are
