Ozymandias Flashcards
Who was Ozymandias?
Ramses II, one of the greatest rulers of all time, vert tyrannical, had lots of riches and a massive empire,
Thought he could be around forever in the form of a statue
What type of poem is ozymandias?
A sonnet- usually associated with love, ozymandias is a narcissist (loves himself), ironic- teasing tone
‘two vast and trunkless legs of stone stand in the desert’
only 2 legs- clinging on for dear life, nothing to them, criticism saying you’re not standing for much longer
‘sneer of cold command’
alliteration- reels off how he would be giving these orders, snarl- animal like
‘colossal wreck’
oxymoron, insult, massive but broken so what is the point.
‘half sunk, a shattered visage lies’
visage- face, shatter= we cannot recognise it, his statue has been abiliterated, no one knows who he is anymore, he doesn’t last forever and has failed, he cant stand the test of time
How do you compare Ozymandias to power of humans?
compare to London- greed, avarice, corruption.
How do you compare Ozymandias to power of nature?
Storm on the Island- sand and the desert are arroding the desert but in Ozymandias it is the rocks
