The Emergence Of Cognitive Neuroscience Flashcards
What is cognitive neuroscience?
Academic field that studies the influence of brain structures on mental processes.
Why did cognitive neuroscience occur?
Due to advances in brain imaging techniques such as MRI or PET scans.
What’s an MRI scan?
A non- invasive imaging technology that produces three dimensional detailed anatomical images.
What does MRI stand for?
Magnetic Resonance Imaging
How does an MRI scan work?
Employs powerful magnets which produces strong magnetic field which forces protons in body to align with field. Radio frequency the pulsed through patient, protons are stimulated + spin out of equilibrium. When radiofreq turned off MRI sensors detect energy released.
What is a PET scan?
An imaging test that allows your doctor to check for diseases in your body
What does PET stand for?
Position Emission Tomography
How does a PET scan work?
By detecting the radiation given off by substance injected into arm called radiotracer as it collects in diff parts of body. By analysing areas where parts of body the radiotracer does/ doesn’t build up. It’s possible to workout how well certain body functions are working and which aren’t
What can an MRI be used for?
Individuals with brain damage to see if there’s any activity in the brain
What can a PET scan be used for?
Most commonly used to detect:
- cancer
- heart problems
- brain disorders
