Milgram’s experiment

A
  • 40 males responded to an advert and was paid $4.50
  • Yale university
  • greeted by researcher with a lab coat
  • fixed draw so participant was always teacher and confederate was learner
  • teacher had to give increasingly strong ( going up 15V each time) electric shock every time the learner got the question wrong.
  • experimenter gave prompts to teacher to encourage them to carry on
  • all participants went to 300 volts and 65% went to the max of 450 volts labelled XXX
  • the volts were fake but the participants were unaware of that

  • individuals see themselves as an agent for carrying out others wishes. They dont take blame as they say they were doing what they were told
