Conformity
Yielding to group pressure
Compliance
Publicly but not privately conforming with a group to avoid rejection
Identification
Temporarily taking on beliefs and behaviours of a group publicly and privately.
Internalisation
Permanently taking on beliefs and behaviours of a group publicly and privately.
Informational social influence
When you look to others for guidance to see if you’re right
Normative social influence
Conforming to a group to avoid rejection
Cognitive dissonance
Two opposing thoughts in your head that creates a unpleasant feeling of anxiety.
Confederates
People who act as participants in experiments.
Situational variables
Factors in the environment that can unintentionally affect the results of a study.
Individual variables
Variable that’s manipulated and controlled by the experiment
Social roles
The part individuals play as members of a social group
De individualisation
Loss of identity of someone
Dehumanisation
To take human qualities off someone
Obedience
To follow someone’s orders who’s in authority

Agentic state
Doesn’t take on responsibility of their own actions blames it on authority
Autonomous state
Individuals feel responsible for their own actions.
Androcdntrism
Behaviours, societies or situations that focus, empathise and are controlled by a male perspective
Dispositional explanation
Cause of behaviour to some internal characteristics of a person
Authoritarian personality
A person who holds rigid beliefs, including in absolute obedience, is submissive to authority
Resistance to social influence
Resisting to social influence such as conforming
Social support
View that the individual has assistance available from others
Locus of control
An individual believes they can control everything in their life
Reactance
Unpleasant motivational arousal that emerges when people experience a threat to their free behaviours
Ironic deviance
Takes place when we believe that the behaviour of the majority is result of unreasonable pressure
Status
Relevant rank that an individual holds
Morality
Standard of society used to decide what’s right or wrong behaviour
