The Elbow (unfinished) Flashcards
What two joints make up the elbow?
• Humeroulnar
• Humeroradial
What are the ranges of movement at the elbow?
• 135-145º flexion
• 0-5º
• 85º supination
• 75º pronation
When is the humeroulnar joint in an open packed position?
70º flexion and 10º supination
When is the humeroulnar joint in a closed packed position?
Full elbow extension with supination
When is the humeroradial joint in an open packed position?
Full extension and full supination
When is the humeroradial joint in a closed packed position?
90º elbow flexion and 5º supination
When is the proximal radioulnar joint in an open packed position?
70º flexion and 35º supination
When is the proximal radioulnar joint in a closed packed position?
5º supination
What are the articulating surfaces of the humeroulnar joint?
Trochlea of humerus and trochlear notch of ulna
What are the articulating surfaces of the humeroradial joint?
Capitalism of humerus and fovea of radius
Where does the annular ligament attach?
Anterior and posterior margins of the radial notch
Which ligament is made of 3 bands?
Ulnar (medial) collateral ligament
Where do the bands of the ulnar collateral ligament attach?
• Anterior - medial epicondylitis to the coronoid process
• Intermediate - medial epicondyle on to the transverse band
• Posterior - medial epicondyle to the medial edge of the olecranon
Where does the radial collateral ligament attach?
Lateral epicondyle and merges with the annular ligament
What is the role of the annular ligament?
Maintain the radial head within the radial notch on the ulna
What is the role of the ulnar collateral ligament?
Limits the ability for the elbow to abduct and offers constraint into a valgus force
What is the role of the radial collateral ligament?
Prevents adduction at the elbow and resist varus forces
What muscles are involved in flexion?
• Biceps brachii
• Brachialis
• Brachioradialis
• Pronator teres
What muscles are involved in extension?

• Anconeus
What muscles are involved in pronation?
• Pronator teres
• Pronator quadratics
• Brachioradialis
What muscles are involved in supination?
• Supinator
• Biceps brachii
• Brachioradialis
