The effects of brain trauma- DP10 Flashcards
Neurodegenerative disease
a term for a group of diseases that
primarily affect neurons in the brain
Forms of Neurodegenerative disease
– Chronic Traumatic Encephalography – Parkinson’s disease – Dementia – Alzheimer's – Motor neurone disease
Alzheimer’s disease
Alzheimer’s disease is a neurodegenerative disease that results from a loss
of neurons in the hippocampus and causes memory loss and personality
change.
What causes Alzheimer’s disease?
. Amyloid plaques (protein deposits)
• Neurofibrillary tangles
• Cortical shrinkage
• Imbalance in acetylcholine (neurotransmitter)
what are symptoms?
Behavioral effects: – Memory loss, especially declarative memories – Personality change – Confusion and disorientation – Repetition
Anterograde amnesia:
an inability to form new memories following an accident
Retrograde amnesia:
an inability to retrieve previously stored memories.
Anterograde amnesia
Often involves damage to the hippocampus
• Can be the result of brain trauma, surgery or drugs
• Less likely to recover compared to retrograde amnesia and less common
as well
Which type of amnesia involves an inability to encode new memories?
Anterograde
Which part of the brain do we find large neuron damage in Alzheimer’s sufferers?
Hippocampus
What are the group of diseases called that affect neurons in the brain?
Neurodegenerative
