Q

Brain structures involved in long term memory

A

Memories cannot be located in an exact spot in the brain.
We do have some understanding of which key brain structures are involved and recognised that varies according to the type of memory and weather it is in the process of being encoded or stored

Q

The role of the hippocampus

A

The cells in the hippocampus can reproduce and help us form new memories

The hippocampus is located in the midbrain, is part of the limbic system and extends into the temporal lobe in each hemisphere.

The hippocampus is particularly important for:

  • Forming explicit memories
  • Memory for complex tasks that require declarative memory
  • The encoding of declarative memories before they become permanent memories
  • Establishing the background/context for new memories
  • Consolidation

Q

The role of the amygdala

A
Processing emotional memories
Retrieves explicit (declarative) memories

due to the close relationship with and proximity to the hippocampus, the hippocampus plays a role in storing emotional memories.
