Q

Unconditional stimulus (UCS)

A

is any stimulus that evokes a response without the organism going through any previous learning (a puff of air into eye makes react)

Q

Conditioned stimulus (CS)

A

is when the NS becomes the CS when it has the ability to produce a specific response (the bell was a neutral stimulus but once it would get a response from the dog it became the CS)

Q

Three phase process example

coughing creating to conditioned response flinching

A

Before conditioning =
Neutral stimulus - coughing

During conditioning =
Unconditioned stimulus -tickling
Unconditioned response - laughing

After conditioning
Conditioned stimulus - coughing
Conditioned response - flinches/squeals/covers ribs

Q

Stimulus generalisation

A

Stimulus other than conditioned stimulus can evoke a response

e.g in pavlov case it happened when conditioned dogs to salivate at a bell, one day rang a different bell and the dogs still salivated.

Q

Extinction

A

when no longer pairing conditioned stimulus with unconditioned stimulus it will no longer evoke a response

e.gonce the dogs realise they weren’t getting food after he kept ringing the bell they stopped responding

Q

Spontaneous recovery

A

can only happen after extinction and doesn’t happen every time

e.g after about a week the dogs that started to not salivate at the bell started salivating again

Q

The little Albert experiment

A
NS - rat
UCS - loud noise
UCR - fear, crying
CS - rat
CR - cry, try to get away

Albert demonstrated stimulus generation as he was scared of the rabbit as well as the rat

An ethical consideration is informed consent. This was breached as the mom was not in the room seeing what they did
