The Earth's Atmosphere Flashcards
What’s the percentage of nitrogen, oxygen margin and other gases?
Nitrogen=79%
Oxygen=20%
Argon=0.9%
Other gases= <1%
How much water in the atmosphere in humid conditions?
5%
What was the situation 4.6 billion years ago (what was created, temperature, life and gases)?
Volcanic activity caused release of Co2, other gases in the air were water methane, ammonia and nitrogen, Earth was very hot, no animals or plants life didn’t evolve yet, overtime planted cool down condensing water vapour in the air creating the oceans
What evolved 2.7 billion years ago and why?
Bacteria, algae and other simple organisms evolved, the oxygen released caused first animal life evolutions
What did photosynthesis do (gases and consequences)?
Taking in CO2 (reducing CO2)
Carbon ends up in the plant
Animals eat the plant, take in CO2 (organic material)
What does organic material mean?
Carbon based
How did sedimentary rock form?
Over millions of years, remains of dead sea organisms build up on the bottom of the ocean, formed into rocks ec lime stone
How do fossil fuels form?
Over very long periods of time, remains of the dead see organisms become fossil fuels
What happened to methane, ammonia and nitrogen over time?
Ammonia and methane reacted with oxygen in the air
Nitrogen is not really reactive so it built up over the years increase its take to 79% today
