Chromatography Flashcards
What are the phases in chromatography and what does each term mean?
Mobile and stationary
Mobile=solvent
Stationary=part of chromatography that doesn’t move e.g paper
If you a substance is more soluble what is the attraction in each phase?
Mobile phase=highly attracted
Stationary=lowly attracted
How do you calculate RF and what does it stand for?
Retention factor
Distance moved by the solvent
Why are RF values important?
Always the same if you do the experiment in the same way with the same substance in the same solvent
This allows us to compare it with other samples
Tells relative solubility of each substance
Max value of the RF would be 1
What is used to drop the substance on paper chromatography?
Capillary tube
What do you do after the chromatography?
Draw a line for distance of the solvent and let the paper dry out to then find RF values
What are the known substances in the practical in terms of purity?
Pure substances
