Crude Oil And Alkanes Flashcards
What is crude Oil?
Non-renewable resource that is a mixture of a large number of compounds, mainly hydrocarbons
What are hydrocarbons?
Molecule only made up of hydrogen and carbons
What are alkanes?
Hydrocarbons with only single carbon-carbon bonds
Why are alkanes called saturated hydrocarbons?
No more hydrogen atoms can be added
What is the general formula for hydrocarbons?
CnH(2n+2)
What are examples of hydrocarbons and how many carbon atoms do they have?
Methane=1
Ethane=2
Propane=3
Butane=4
How does temperature change as you go up the fractionating column?
Decreases
What is the order of the hydrocarbons from lowest boiling point to highest boiling and what is one use of each
Bottled Gas=camofires
Petrol=fuel in cars
Naphtha=chemical feedstock
Keroseme=aircraft fuel
Diesel=large trucks
Fuel oil=factories (not efficient)
Bitumen=Tarring roads
What does larger hydrocarbon molecules mean?
Higher boiling point
Which of the 6 hydrocarbons are the alkanes?
Bottled Gas (they exist as a gas)
What does higher viscosity mean in terms of
More sticky, Higher B.p
What does more flammability mean in length of hydrocarbons?
Smaller molecules
What does more volatility mean?
Smaller molecules
What does volatility mean?
How easily a liquid turns into a gas
