Atmospheric Pollutants Flashcards
What are atmospheric Pollutants?
Substances that contaminate our air, making it harmful or damaging for human health or the environment
What are Pollutants gases?
Water vapour
Carbon dioxide
Sulfur dioxide
Carbon monoxide
Nitrogen oxides
Carbon particulates
Unburnt hydrocarbons
Which of the Pollutants are not toxic?
H2O, CO2
What are effects of incomplete combustion?
Carbon particulates:
Lead to global dimming (some light reflects out of space - less production of plants)
Can damage the cells in our lungs e.g cancer
Also releases Unburnt hydrocarbons also released
How can you prevent Sulfur dioxide formed?
Can be removed from fuels before burning
Acidic SO2 can be neutralised in the waste “flue” (gases at factories or power stations)
When does nitrogen and oxygen react?
In car engines (very high temperature)
What is chemical formula of nitrogen oxides?
NOx
What are effects of nitrogen oxides?
Breathing problems
Acid rain
When are Pollutants and Unburnt hydrocarbons released?
Combustion Of fuels, incomplete combustion
