Combustion Of Hydrocarbons Flashcards
What do hydrocarbons produce when burnt?
Carbon dioxide and water
What are best hydrocarbons for fuels in terms of size?
Smaller molecules
What us a use of methane, Propane and octane?
Methane=bunsen burner
Propane=camping gad
Octane=fuel in cars
How do you test for the products of complete combustion?
You burn the hydrocarbon making the gas go in a tube, water condenses in a U-tube where it will find anhydrous copper sulfate which will go from white to blue in presence of water, the carbon dioxide (not condensed in the U-tube) will go another little tube found on the other side of the U-tube which will go in atest tube with lime water inside, the lime water goes from colourless, to cloudy, white or milky in the presence of CO2
What is incomplete combustion?
When a combustion reaction in which there is not enough oxygen for the fuel to burn completely
What will be formed instead of carbon dioxide in a incomplete combustion?
Carbon monoxide
What if oxygen is in extremely small to no quantity?
Carbon wool is formed instead creating a carbon (soot)
What is the problem with soot since it’s not poisonous?
It is a pollutant
