The Early Periodic Table Flashcards
1
Q
What were the problems with Newland’s octaves?
A
Some groups had a mixture of metals and non metals
> it only worked for the first few elements
> he didn’t take into account the undiscovered elements
2
Q
What did Mendeleev do that was so genius?
A
> left gaps for undiscovered elements( so that elements with the same properties fitted into the same groups)
> he predicted the atomic mass and properties of the undiscovered elements
3
Q
What did Newlands do?
A
Put the elements into order of atomic mass
> he noticed similar properties of every 8th element which became his octaves
