Electrolysis Of Aluminium Oxide Flashcards
1
Q
What is the white powder left after the purification of bauxite?
A
Aluminium oxide
2
Q
Why is cryolite used for the electrolysis of aluminium oxide?
A
> aluminium oxide has a very high melting point,
> cryolite is melted and Al2O3 is dissolved into it
> brings temperature down to 900 degrees Celsius, cheaper and easier.
3
Q
Why do the graphite anodes have to be replaced occasionally?
A
Because after the oxygen ions produce O2 they bond with the carbon in the graphite to produce carbon dioxide, using up some of the graphite
4
Q
What is the main ore of aluminium?
A
Bauxite
