Metallic Structures Flashcards

1
Q

Why are metals good conductors?

A

Because all of the delocalised electrons from the outer shells are free to move through the structure, carry a current or heat energy

Q

Why are alloys harder than pure metals?

A

Because the layers of atoms become distorted because of the different sized atoms, meaning they cannot slide over one another

Q

What is the structure of metals

A

The delocalised electrons surround the positive ions, they have high melting and boiling points as there are strong opposite forces of attraction

Layers of atoms can slide over one another, meaning they are malleable
