Making Salts Flashcards

1
Q

Why can you not use a base neutralisation reaction for reacting an acid and an alkali?

A

Because you cannot tell when the reaction has finished

Q

How do you conduct an acid+alkali salt making reaction?

A

You must use exactly the right amount of alkali for the acid.

> using a universal indicator, conduct a titration experiment.

> use the exact same amount of alkali but without the indicator as this will contaminate the salt

> crystallise

Q

What are 3 uses of creating insoluble salts using a precipitation reaction?

A

> removing the hardness of water

> removing poisonous substances (such as Pb) from water

> treating effluent

Q

How do you create an insoluble salt?

A

Choose two substances that contain the ions you need for your salt

Mix them together and filter out and dry the salt on filter paper

Q

How do you make a salt using a metal, metal oxide or metal hydroxide?

A

Add the base to the acid, it will dissolve

You will know when the reaction is neutralised as the excess base will sink to the bottom.

Then filter out the excess base.

To get the salt on its own evaporate some of the water ( to make the solution concentrated) then leave the rest to slowly evaporate( crystallisation)
