Electrolysis Flashcards
What happens at the cathode?
> the positive cations are attracted where they gain electrons to become atoms.(reduction)
What happens to the electrons at the anode?
They flow off into the circuit
What is reduction?
The gaining of electrons to produce atoms
What is oxidation?
The loss of electrons to form atoms
What are the products of the electrolysis of NaCl solution?
Hydrogen
Sodium hydroxide
Chlorine
What happens at the anode for the electrolysis of NaCl solution?
2 chloride ions lose an electron and become one chlorine molecule
- oxidation.
The chlorine leaves the process as a gas.
What happens at the cathode (-ve) for the electrolysis of NaCl solution?
Two H+ ions gain an electron to become a hydrogen molecule
What happens at the anode?
> negative ions (anions) are attracted, where they lose electrons to become atoms. (Oxidation)
