Function of the inner ear
Balance, orientation of head in respect to gravity and direction of accelerative and decelerative forces on head
What does the external ear consist of?
Auricle, external auditory meatus and tympanic membrane
What is the auricle made of?
Elastic cartilage and skin
What does the middle ear consist of?
Auditory ossicles (malleus, incus &stapes) and communicates posteiorly with mastoid air cells anteriorly with pharynx by the Eustachian tube
What is the sensory supply of the ear?
External ear= auriculotemporal branch of CNV and small auricular branch of vagus
Internal ear= vestibulocochlear nerve
What is the bony labyrinth?
Bony wall of outer ear -Vestibule -Semicircular ducts -Cochlea Filled with perilymph
What is the membranous labyrinthe?
Found within bony labyrinthe -Utricle -Saccule -Semicircular canals -cochlear canal Filled with endolymph
What are the specialised sensory receptors of the utricle and saccule?
The maculae
What are the specialised sensory receptors of the semicircular canals?
The ampullary crests
canals at right angles in 3 planes
What are the specialised sensory receptors of the cochlea?
Spiral organs of Corti (sound wave receptors)
