Mouth and tongue Flashcards
What innervates the intrinsic muscles of the tongue?
Hypoglossal nerve
Name the two folds of the oral cavity
Anterior= palatoglossal arch (contains palatoglossal muscle) Posterior= palatopharyngeal arch (contains palatopharyngeus muscle)
What is the opening between oral cavity and oropharynx called?
Isthmus of the fauces
What divides the tongue into anterior 2/3 and posterior 1/3?
By the V shaped sulcus terminalis where the circumvallate papillae are found
Where is the root of the tongue?
Attached to hyoid bone
Name the 3 types of papillae
Filiform (friction, has keratinised tip)
Fungiform (taste buds)
Circumvallate (larger, contain taste buds)
Describe the sensory innervation of the tongue
Anterior 2/3 has chorda tympani for taste and lingual for general sensory
Posterior 1/3 has glossopharyngeal for both taste and general sensory
Root is innervated by vagus nerve
Describe the motor innervation of the tongue
Hypogloassal nerve innervates intrinsic muscles of tongue
Extrinsic muscles are innervated by vagus& hypoglossal
What innervates the palatoglossal muscle?
Vagus nerve
What innervates the genioglossal muscle?
Hypoglossal nerve
What innervates the hyoglossal muscle?
Hypoglossal nerve
What innervates the styloglossal muscle?
Hypoglossal nerve
What innervates the mylohyoid muscle?
Branch of the mandibular nerve
What innervates the anterior belly of the digastric?
Branch of the mandibular nerve
What is the posterior belly of the digastric innervated by?
Facial nerve
