The Ear Flashcards
Pinna
captures sound waves (A)
Auditory Canal + Wax functions
funnels sound into the middle ear, lined with ceruminous (wax) glands, wax fights bacteria and moistens ear (B)
Ear Drum
vibrates with sound waves, similar to tympani (C)
Middle Ear Ossicles
amplify sound waves to hear better (D)
Semi-Circular Canals
detect balance while in motion, talks to the cerebellum (E)
Vestibular Nerve
carry balance info to the cerebellum (F)
Vestibule
balance at rest, talks to cerebellum (E’)
Auditory (Cochlear) Nerve
carry hearing information to the temporal lobe (G)
Cochlea & Origin of cochlea
bony, fluid-filled snail shell & mechanoreceptors of the ear (H)
Eustachian Tube
pressure relief from the middle ear to the throat (airplane affects this) (I)
Round Window
a flexible membrane that allows cochlear fluid to vibrate (as the oval goes IN, the round goes OUT) (J)
Oval Window
flexible membrane where ossicles transfer vibrations into the cochlea (J’)
Ossicles
connect the tympanic membrane to the inner ear allowing for the transmission of sound waves (it’s the thing that hits the ear drum)
Oval Window
movement of fluid within the cochlea and activation of receptors for hearing (connects to snail shell)
3 Ossicle names
hammer, stirrup, anvil
