Inheritance Vocabulary Flashcards
Gene
Basic unit of heredity
Allele(s)
An alternate form of a gene (ex: height - being short vs tall), we pass these down
Homozygous
Offspring that inherit SAME (ex: TT or tt) (think of gay being HOMO-sexual- ignore this Benson) (please)
Heterozygous
Offspring that inherit different (ex: Tt)
Hybrid
An individual that is heterozygous for one or more alleles -> Tt for each
Monohybrid
A cross involving one inherited trait
Dihybrid
A cross involving two inherited traits
Dominant
The allele that is expressed when present (takes priority)
Recessive
The hidden allele when present with a dominant one (lower case/short)
Genotype
The combination of letters
Genotype Ratio
The ratio of different types of letters - (GG - Gg - Gg - gg) -> (1-2-1) need to say which combo is which letter
Phenotype
Ph stands for photo (what you see) - is what the genes physically appear as
Parent Generation (P1)
The parents involved in a cross
F1 (Finial Generation)
Offspring of P1
F2 (2nd Finial Generation)
F1 becomes P2 who produce F2
