Changes In Population Growth (ew) Flashcards
4 Factors of Population Change (2 Plus, 2 Minus)
Natality, Mortality, Emigration, Immigration
Two types of growth curves?
Exponential and Logistic
Between the two growth curves where would “R” organisms typically fall into?
Exponential Growth
Between the two growth curves where would “K” organisms typically fall into?
Logistical Growth
What is carrying capacity?
The maximum amount of organisms one ecosystem or area is able to hold in one time
Define biotic potential
the maximum amount of offspring produced by by a species under ideal conditions
Six aspects that biotic potential depends upon
Fecundity, Sexual Maturity age, Length of gestation, length of reproductive life, capacity for survival and number of times per year an organism reproduces
What is fecundity?
the max number of offspring a female can produce per pregnancy
Define Environmental resistance factors
factors that restrict the amount a population is able to reproduce
Define r-selected populations
Populations that grow rapidly, are short-lived and usually small in size
Define k-selected populations
Populations that grow slowly, are long-lived and usually larger in size
