What is the definition of a minor?
A person who is between 17-19 years old
OR
A person who is under 17 and is, or has been married or in a civil union or a de facto relationship
What is the definition of a child?
A person who is under the age of 17 years
Does not include a person who has been married or in a civil union or a de facto relationship
What is violence defined as?
Physical abuse
Sexual abuse
Psychological abuse
What is domestic violence?
Means violence against any person by any other person with whom the first person is, or has been, in a domestic relationship.
What is physical abuse?
This relates to assault and actual physical harm to another person or persons.
Eg assault
What is sexual abuse?
These are assaults of sexual nature.
What is psychological abuse?
- intimidation
- harassment
- damage to property
- threats of physical, sexual and psychological abuse
What does domestic relationships include?
Partners, family members, people who share a household, same sex relationships, close personal relationships, but not employee-employer or tenant-landlord relationships.
What is ODARA?
Ontario Domestic Assault Risk Assessment tool
Developed to predict recidivism of assault in intimate partner relationships
What is a PSO?
Police safety order
What is a PAR?
Person at risk
What is a bound person?
The person against whom a PSO has been issued
What is a POI?
Person of interest
What is a protection order?
Protection given to specific persons to protect them from domestic abuse
Who can apply for a protection order?
- A person who is or was in a domestic relationship with another person
- the representative of a child on the child’s behalf
- the representative of a person lacking capacity on the person’s behalf
- a third party on behalf of the victim
