What is the meaning of the word ‘Church’?
Ekklesia - the assembly
The community of those who have been forgiven, who have received new life in Christ, and who are joined in pursuing God’s mission in the world.
The church is not a building, it is people.
The church is not individual, people are saved into God’s people
Explain the terms universal and local as it relates to Church
Universal is all believers globally
Local is a single local church congregation
What is the relationship between Israel and the church?
The Church is a continuation of Israel
Explain briefly with Scripture references the birth of the Church. Where? When? Who? Etc.
The birth of the Church happened on the day of Pentecost, 50 days after the death and resurrection of Jesus.
Then days after Jesus ascended back to heaven (Acts 1:9), the Holy Spirit was poured out upon 120 of Jesus’ followers who waited and prayed (Acts 1:15; 2:1-4). They were then empowered to boldly proclaim the gospel of Christ, validating their message with signs and wonders (Acts 2:4, 38-41; 3:6-7; 8:7). Additionally, thousands of Jews in Jerusalem on the day of Pentecost. They heard the message in their own language and believed (Acts 2:5-8; 2:41; 4:4). Those saved were baptized. When persecution broke out, they scattered and spread the gospel further (Acts 8:4; 11:19-21)
As you understand it, what is the purpose, and function of the local church assembly?
Give at least three metaphors the Scriptures use to describe the Church and its relationship with Christ.
