The Diversity of Life Flashcards
Biodiversity
The great variety of life
Classification
The system of grouping organisms together that share common characteristics.
Five Kingdoms
- Animals
- Plants
- Protists
- Fungi
- Bacteria
Stimuli
All the changes in an organism’s environment
Protists
Includes plankton, algae, slime and water moulds. Some use photosynthesis while others use animal like eating.
Fungi
Do not contain chlorophyll so cannot photosynthesise. Feed on dead plant and animal material.
Binary fission
How bacteria reproduce. One bacteria cell divides into two and the number of bacteria doubles with each generation.
Two uses of bacteria
Anibiotics: Used to produce antibiotics for treat diseases caused by fungi or other bacteria.
Vitamins: Bacterian in the large intestine produce vitamins B and K.
Pathogen
An organism that causes disease.
Vaccination
Protecting the body from a particular disease. It is made from a weak or dead specimen of the pathogen that causes the disease.
