Body Systems Flashcards
Enzyme
A biological catalyst that speeds up the chemical reactions in cells.
Substrate
The substance an enzyme acts on.
Product
The enzyme acts on the substrate and changes it into a product.
Ingestion
The food is taken into the mouth.
Digestion
The food is broken down into simpler, absorbable molecules.
Absorption
The molecules are passed into the blood and carried to all the cells in the body.
Assimilation
The food is used by the body for energy and to build new cells.
Egestion
Undigested food material is released from the digestive system as faeces.
Mouth
Food is in ingested through the mouth. Your teeth physically digest food.
Salivary glands
The salivary glands store saliva which chemically digests food especially food with starch in it.
Oesophagus
The oesophagus carries food to the stomach using peristalsis.
Stomach
The stomach is a bag that churns and temporarily stores food .hydrofluoric.
Small intestine
Food from the stomach enters the small intestine, the food breakdown is completed here. Villi increase surface area for absorption.
Large intestine
Large intestines re-absorb water into the blood.
Pancreas
Food does not travel through the pancreas it produces enzymes to break down food.
