Structures and Processes of Life: Plants Flashcards
The 4 Plant Organs
- Root
- Stem
- Leaf
- Flower
(Can also have buds, fruit and seeds)
2 Functions of the root
- Anchors and supports the plant in the soil.
2. Absorbs water and minerals from the soil.
2 Functions of the stem
- Supports the buds, leaves and flowers.
2. Carries water and minerals from the roots to the lesves and flowers.
2 Functions of the leaf
- Produces food by photosynthesis.
2. Allows the exchange of gases with the atmosphere.
The role of the flower
The role of the flower is sexual reproduction.
Two types of transport tissue
- Xylem tissue transports water and minerals from the soil through the roots to the leaves.
- Phloem tissue transports food (glucose) made during photosynthesis around the plant.
Transpiration
The loss of water vapour from the surface of a plant (caused by evaporation).
Vascular bundles
Xylem tissue and phloem tissue are found together in vascular bundles.
Stomata
Small pores on the underside of leaves through which gases and water pass out of the plant.
A Tropism
The directional growth response of a plant to stimulus.
Phototropism
The growth of a plant toward light.
Geotropism
The growth of a plant in response to gravity.
