Ecology Flashcards
Ecology
The study of how living things interact with their environment and each other.
Population
A group of organisms of the same species living in the same habitat.
Habitat
The place where an organism lives
Community
All the different populations that live in a habitat
Ecosystem
All the communities interacting with each other and their environment
Biome
An ecosystem that extends over a very large area.
Biosphere
All of Earth’s ecosystems together
2 types of Factors that affect plants and animals living in a habitat
Abiotic: Non living - e.g: weather, soil, type of landscape
Biotic: Living - the types of organism living there and how they affect each other
Competition
The struggle between organisms for things that are in short supply such as food, space, oxygen, water, light and mates
Predation
Controls the number of organisms in a habitat. A predator hunts and kills other animals for food. The humted is called prey.
Symbiosis
A relationship between organisms of different species where at least one benefits
Interdependence
When two organisms depend on each other for an important aspect of their survival
