Chemical digestion
Involves the use of chemicals called enzymes to break down food. Enzymes are chemicals that speed up reactions without being used up in the reaction
How enzymes work
Enzymes act on a substrate and breaks it down into a product e.g. substrate=starch, enzyme=amylase (saliva), product= maltose (sugar)
Incisors
At the front of the mouth.4 upper 4 lower. Used for biting and cutting
Canine
One on either side of the incisors. 2 upper and 2 lower. Grasp and tear food
Pre-molar
3 at either side of the canine. Six upper and six lower. Grind and crush food
Molars
2 at either side of the premolars. 4 upper and 4 lower. Grind and crush food
Herbivore
Only eats plants. Very large incisors. Large molars and pre-molars to chew grass
Carnivore
Only eats meat. Large canine teeth. Used the teeth to catch and tear their prey
Omnivore
Eats plants and meat. Needs all of the different teeth
